Who, Where or What are Cocklicranes? What does their coming signify? Should we put our hopes in them?

David Avery, Panmuphle Press, San Francisco CA, 2015. Edition of 8.
10” x 8.5” x 1”; 10 unnumbered pages folded accordion style, with four etchings and four letterpress text pages, title page and colophon. The cover is paste paper covered board with an inset containing a shell and glass eye, and fits in a brown paper slipcase. The text, which uses Goudy Old Style, and the etchings are printed on Hahnemuhle Warm White Copperplate paper.

The Coming of the Cocklicranes, or His Kingdom Restored was designed by David Avery, who created and printed the etchings in his studio in San Francisco. The text is from Ch. XLIX, How Picrochole in his Flight fell into great Misfortunes, and what Gargantua did after the Battle, from The Very Horrific Life the Great Gargantua by François Rabelais, and was typeset and printed by Jonathan Clark, who also bound the books at Artichoke Press in MountainView, CA. The paste paper used for the cover was created by Diane L. Bond in Buffalo, NY.

There are eight copies of the book signed by the artist. In addition, each etching was printed separately in an edition of twenty impressions on Hahnemuhle Goethe White paper by the artist.
